Anonymous letter to directors of Das Deutsche Haus, 1918

When the United States entered World War I, German-Americans were pressured to prove their loyalty to the U.S. This anonymous letter illustrates the community's attitude toward things outwardly German. Such attitudes prompted many German-American organizations and institutions to adopt new names. On February 22, 1918, Das Deutsche Haus was renamed "The Athenaeum."
