On This Day in IUPUI History: September 2, 1977

September 2, 1977

On this day, Dr. Steven C. Beering, dean of the IU School of Medicine, announced the establishment of a Diabetes Research and Training Center through a $1.4 million grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The three-year grant, initiated by Dr. Charles M. Clark in the Department of Medicine, was awarded in a national competition. The diabetes center in the IU Medical Center was one of five such centers established in the United States.

In the twentieth century, the increasing prevalence of diabetes in the United States prompted intensified attention to arrest its growth. Since that time, diabetes research has been a focal point in the School of Medicine. Today, the IU Center for Diabetes and Metabolic Diseases in the School of Medicine works to promote new discoveries and translate research into prevention strategies. The center is one of now sixteen NIH-designated diabetes research centers in the country.
