November 5, 2013.
On this day, IUPUI chancellor Charles R. Bantz introduced a new draft of a comprehensive strategic plan for IUPUI, "Our Commitment to Indiana and Beyond: IUPUI Strategic Plan." The draft language "reaffirms the campus's commitment to the city of Indianapolis and the state of Indiana, as well as to continued national and global engagement to improve the quality of life in communities worldwide." Work on the plan had begun in 2012 when Bantz commissioned Executive Vice Chancellor Nasser H. Paydar to lead a new planning process for the campus.
According to Bantz, the draft plan focused on three priorities: success of students, advances in health and life sciences, and "contributions to the well-being of the citizens of Indianapolis, the state of Indiana and beyond." The draft plan laid out a number of efforts to achieve the broad objectives. These included increased emphasis on inclusivity, continued evolution and innovation in teaching and learning, continued communication with stakeholders, strengthened community engagement, and focus on translating research into practical applications.
Campus leaders shared the draft plan widely and solicited comments and suggestions. Many campus committees and task forces had input. The plan went through more changes until it was released in final form in August 2014. Attached as appendices were long lists of names of students, staff, and faculty who contributed to the document.
The long gestation of the strategic plan and the large number of persons involved in devising it attests to the hard work of charting the course of a major educational institution.
