November 17, 1994.
On this day, Georgetown University professor of philosophy Thomas L. Beauchamp spoke before members of the faculties of the Indiana University School of Medicine and the IU School of Law-Indianapolis as the first recipient of the McDonald-Merrill-Ketcham Memorial Award. The lectureship and award "brings leading scholars and policy makers in the fields of law and medicine to [IUPUI] for the benefit of students, faculty, the bar and the medical community." Beauchamp spoke on "The Justification of Physician-assisted Deaths."
Since 1994, the McDonald-Merrill-Ketcham Lectureship and Award has brought to Indianapolis leading scholars of bioethics, health law, and related areas of intersection of law and medicine. The papers presented have been published in the Indiana Law Review and the Indiana Health Law Review.
The lecture occurs under the auspices of the William S. and Christine S. Hall Center for Law and Health in the IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law.
