March 17, 1977.
On this day, dignitaries of the Indiana University School of Medicine and Wishard Memorial Hospital, the county hospital for Marion County administered by the School of Medicine, dedicated a thirteen-bed burn unit in Wishard. The unit, only the second of its kind in Indiana, would serve patients who required specialized care. The director of the unit was Dr. John Ronald Mayer, a plastic surgeon and assistant professor of surgery in the School of Medicine, who noted that the unit would serve patients from all over Indiana.
In 1975, the IU Medical Center and city government agreed that the School of Medicine would take over medical management of Marion County General Hospital, soon renamed Wishard Memorial Hospital. The burn unit was one of several improvements that came about from the new management arrangement.
