On This Day in IUPUI History: June 2, 1975

June 2, 1975.

On this day, Dean Schuyler F. Otteson of the Indiana University School of Business reported to the Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce that state legislators recommended to the Indiana Commission for Higher Education that greater emphasis be placed on developing and expanding business programs on the IUPUI campus. To that end, Otteson announced several initiatives involving shifting leadership from the Bloomington campus and allocating faculty resources to Indianapolis.

Among personnel matters, Dr. Arthur M. Weimer, formerly dean of the school and a finance specialist, would relocate to Indianapolis to take up teaching and program-development tasks. Dr. Howard G. Schaller, associate dean, would assume responsibility for business programs in Indianapolis and continue as the school's chief academic officer. Otteson would establish an Indianapolis office and report to Chancellor Glenn W. Irwin, Jr. As well, the university would soon announce the appointment of five new professors to teach in Indianapolis. Bloomington faculty would continue to commute to the metropolis to teach classes.

As well, the School of Business's office in Indianapolis would relocate from the 38th Street Campus to the Union Building downtown to be closer to the majority of students who studied at IUPUI, as well as closer to more library resources. A key element in the plan would be putting up a new business building to house an enlarged and more comprehensive business program.

The School of Business's moves were part of the wider reorganization of Indiana University initiated by President John W. Ryan and approved by the Board of Trustees in 1974, establishing Indianapolis and Bloomington as co-equal "core" campuses in the IU system.

Groundbreaking for a business building (Business/SPEA) did not occur until 1978, and the building opened in 1981.
