On This Day in IUPUI History: July 31, 1972

July 31, 1972

On this day, IUPUI announced the start of Project Upward Bound, a new program for recently discharged United States military veterans enrolled at IUPUI. The program aimed to address the needs of men and women who had served in the armed forces who were entering college for the first time. The program originated in the period when many veterans of the Vietnam war sought higher education. IUPUI opened an Office of Veterans Affairs in 1973 with federal grant funds to address veteran/student issues. The program continued for several years, later being called Veterans Upward Bound in 1991 after the Gulf War invasion of Iraq. Today the IUPUI Office for Veterans and Military Personnel works with veterans and active-duty students.
