On this day, "Successful Aging through Fitness," a conference aimed at promoting fitness and health maintenance for the growing number of people living into their 80s, took place at University Place Conference Center. The IU Schools of Allied Health Sciences, Nursing, Medicine, Physical Education and Social Work-along with the National Institute for Fitness and Sport and the Indiana Geriatric Education Center at IUPUI all sponsored the event.
The co-sponsorship by a broad swath of campus schools attested to the importance placed on physical activity for healthy aging. Today, the Indiana Geriatic Education and Training Center resides in the Department of Medicine in the IU School of Medicine and works with other schools and entities to train health-care professionals to integrate geriatric care with primary care.
