On This Day in IUPUI History: August 22, 1974

August 22, 1974

On this day, the IUPUI Student Activities Board sponsored a free all-campus dance, which took place in the parking lot west of the Union Building. (Eskenazi Hospital now resides on that spot.) A local band, Stones Crossing, played between 8:30 and 11:30pm.

The Student Activities Programming Board is a student body that plans and schedules events, using the activities fee that students pay when they enroll each semester. In days of yore, before people mediated their communications with handheld devices and social-media software, people encountered each other in person. Events like dances, movies, contests, lectures, and others served to bring students together. They shared experiences and ideas, learning and growing in the process. The Board scheduled many dances and other events on campus. While some dances were just to help people meet other people, student groups used dances to raise awareness and funds for important social causes.
