Individuals with Disabilities

The Library provides assistance to persons with permanent or temporary disabilities on an individual basis. Services include but are not limited to: assistance with bibliographic sources; orientation to the Library building; space for studying and taking examinations; access to IUCAT, online resources and the Internet; and the retrieval of materials from our collection. In order to provide the most appropriate service to meet specific needs, the Library needs to be informed of the nature of the disability and the resulting special need.

Adaptive Education Learning Center

Located on the library's third level, the Adaptive Education Learning Center provides services to all special-needs library users; though, preference is given to IUPUI individuals with disabilities. Equipment includes large screen monitors, CCTV, Magnacam, oversized mouse, oversized intellikey board, adjustable keyboard, universal- switch mounting system, two quiet booths, and two scanners. Users have access to the following software: ZoomText Xtra, Dragon Naturally Speaking, JAWS, Window Eyes, OpenBook Ruby, Kurzweil 1000 and 3000, and Inspiration.

Hours of operation are 8:00am-7:00pm (Monday-Thursday) and Friday by appointment only. The Center is closed on weekends and holidays.

For additional information, or to make an appointment or visit IUPUI Adaptive Educational Services.

Equipment

The Library has accessible workstations for the Library's electronic services available throughout the library. Zoom text is available on all workstations. The majority of all videos in the library collection are close-captioned

Service Animals

Service Animals, and service-animals-in-training are welcome and permitted in all areas of University Library.

Physical Access

University Library has two entrances. The ground floor entrance, located on the northeast face of the building, has two power-assisted doors that are open during normal library hours. Elevators located in the center of the building provide access to all levels of the facility.  Wheelchair or crutches are available upon request at the Service and Information Desk.

The main entrance to the library is via the Business / SPEA connector located on the second level. This connector is wheelchair accessible from the second level of the business / SPEA building, and links directly with both the North Street and Natatorium garages.

Parking

Parking for those with a Disabled Parking Permit is available in both the surface lots and the parking garages. Visitors are encouraged to park in the North Street Garage. The North Street Garage is connected by skywalks and covered walkways directly to the library’s main entrance. There are four handicapped parking spaces located on the Blake Street service drive between University College and the Business SPEA building, which is adjacent to the library.

Restrooms

Wheelchair accessible rest rooms with power-assisted doors are located in the second level lobby, on either side of the elevators. Additional wheelchair accessible rest rooms are located on the lower level, on the south side of the third level stacks and the north side of the fourth level stacks.

Retrieval of Books and Journals or Other Assistance

Individuals with disabilities that make it difficult to retrieve books and journal articles will be provided with assistance. Library staff will use our best efforts to search and retrieve a reasonable number* of items within one hour of the receipt of completed request. Other items should be available for pickup in less than two business days. The other items may also be shipped directly to your home, for a fee.

On some occasions, a lack of available staff may preclude the library from retrieving material within this time frame. In this instance, both parties should agree upon a workable completion target.
