A priority for the Center for Digital Scholarship is to strategically adopt and advocate for open-research infrastructure that is controlled by the academic community. We actively encourage our library to invest in infrastructure and initiatives that allow us to build and support a culture that prioritizes open access to knowledge, on our own campus and beyond. Below is a list of the initiatives in which we currently invest and a brief description of how these investments support our work:
Crossref
Crossref is a digital object identifier (DOI) Registration Agency of the International DOI Foundation. Digital object identifiers make research objects easy to find, cite, link, assess, and reuse. Crossref is a non-profit membership organization. As Crossref members, we are able to register the DOIs we create for articles published on Open Access Journals at IUPUI, increasing access to this important research.
DataCite
DataCite is an international not-for-profit organization which aims to increase access to research data, increase acceptance of research data as legitimate scholarly contributions, and support data archiving and reuse–primarily through digital object identifier registration. IUPUI University Library contributes to the IU Libraries membership to DataCite, allowing us to register DOIs for IUPUI ScholarWorks and IUPUI DataWorks, increasing access to the scholarship and data archived in both repositories.
DSpace
DSpace is open source repository software typically used for creating open access repositories for scholarly and/or published digital content. As DSpace members, IUPUI University Library supports its development and helps set the strategic direction through participation in the DSpace Leadership Group. The DSpace software underpins IUPUI University Library’s open digital repositories: IUPUI ScholarWorks, IUPUI Data Works, and IUPUI eArchives–making the unique scholarship, research data, and digital archival materials openly accessible to users around the world.
LPC
The Library Publishing Coalition (LPC) is an independent, community-led membership association of academic and research libraries and library consortia engaged in scholarly publishing. Through its membership, IUPUI University Library supports and engages with this community of practitioners seeking to extend the impact and sustainability of library publishing and open scholarship.
ORCID
Open Researcher Contributor ID (ORCID) is a unique identifier for authors and contributors to scholarly communication. ORCID helps researchers track their scholarly output, distinguish themselves from others, and increases the visibility of their work. As members of the ORCID US Community through Lyrasis, IUPUI University library has access to tools and resources to increase ORCID adoption among IUPUI researchers. Increased ORCID adoption benefits researchers and supports the library’s efforts in aggregating, curating, and openly sharing metadata about IUPUI’s research activities in order to support research assessment, strategic planning, and reuse.
PKP
The Public Knowledge Project (PKP) is a non-profit research initiative focused on the importance of making research openly available through open access initiatives and developing open source software to facilitate broad access to research. PKP develops Open Journal Systems (OJS), open source journal publishing software used by over 25,0000 scholarly journals worldwide. As supporters of PKP, IUPUI University Library supports the development of OJS, the software on which the library’s open access journal publishing service runs.
SPARC
The Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC) is a non-profit organization that supports systems for research and education that are open and equitable. As a member of SPARC, University Library supports an agenda focused on driving policy change and cultivating communities that advance a vision of knowledge as a public good.
