Historical Note
Mutual benefit societies have served as social support organizations for many immigrant groups, including the German community in Indianapolis. Several societies of this type (known as "Unterstutzungs Vereins" in German) were formed in the city during the latter half of the nineteenth century. One example is the Heimaths' Unterstutzungs Verein, founded in 1897. Its mission was to provide assistance to its members in times of need. The Heimaths' Unterstutzungs Verein is still active. It is a member organization of the city's Federation of German Societies.
