May 31, 1997.
On this day, IUPUI staged a performance of Guidance!, a play written by Indianapolis teens and advisers associated with the Interdenominational Churches for Education Excellence (ICEE), a group of congregations in Indianapolis that worked closely with IUPUI leaders. The play dramatized youths' preparation for college education and the importance of seeking assistance from adults in planning their education. The staging was a command performance due to the success of the 1996 premiere.
The performance took place at North Central High School. Along with IUPUI and ICEE, co-sponsors of the show were the Indiana Youth Institute, Indianapolis Parks and Recreation, the Church Federation of Indianapolis, and others. According to Regina Turner of the IUPUI Office of the Vice Chancellor for Undergraduate Education, "This play provides positive information about making choices to prepare students for college...[W]e want to get this timeless information out to as many people as we can."
