On This Day in IUPUI History: June 4, 1988

June 4, 1988.

On this day, at their meeting held on the Indiana University-Kokomo campus, the IU Board of Trustees approved assigning Dean of the Faculties Dr. William M. Plater the additional title of executive vice chancellor for IUPUI. He assumed the role of retiring Dr. Howard Schaller, who had held the title of executive dean for IUPUI. Plater worked closely with Chancellor Gerald L. Bepko to continue the rapid development of IUPUI's academic programs.

Also in that meeting, the Trustees approved the appointment of  Eugene Tempel as vice chancellor of external affairs for IUPUI. He continued as vice president of the IU Foundation for the Indianapolis campus. In both roles, Tempel worked closely with Bepko and Plater to coordinate community and alumni relations and fund raising.

Under the guidance of these and other campus leaders, IUPUI witnessed marked growth in the number and quality of academic programs, the infrastructure to support faculty and student research and learning, and the building of close ties to constituencies both local and international.
