July 4, 1991
IUPUI’s downtown location makes it a popular spot for viewing fireworks that light up the Indianapolis skyline during July 4 Independence Day festivities. Despite the hoards of people who fill the roofs of campus parking garages to watch downtown fireworks shows, campus policy bans the use of fireworks on any university property.
On July 4, 1991, Fire Protection Services at IUPUI reminded spectators that their policy “prohibits the use of illegal fireworks, as well as legal fireworks such as sparklers and other ‘over the counter’ types.’” The policy was updated in June of 2012 to prohibit the sale of fireworks on campus.
