August 18, 1982
On this day, the United States Long Course Championships began in the IUPUI Natatorium.
The 1982 opening of the Natatorium, a premiere swimming facility, brought top swimming competitions to Indianapolis. Events attracted large crowds. Planners expected thirty-thousand spectators and over fourteen-hundred swimmers and coaches to attend this national competition.
As with the track-and-field events scheduled for the newly opened IUPUI track stadium, city and university leaders attracted major swimming events in the hope of showcasing Indianapolis as an important sports hub. As well, IUPUI administrators planned to impress visitors with the young campus. Track and swimming events hosted at IUPUI brought many thousands of visitors who spent millions of dollars in the city. They left campus with a new appreciation for IUPUI.
