August 16, 1996
On this day, H. Oner Yurtseven, an internationally known researcher and educator in electrical engineering, was approved as the new dean of the Purdue School of Engineering and Technology at IUPUI by the IU Board of Trustees.
Joining the Department of Electrical Engineering first as a visiting professor in 1977, Yurtseven published widely in robotics and signal processing. He turned his attention to university administration and served as associate dean for academic programs in SET and provost of IUPUI's Malaysia program. With his appointment as dean he worked to strengthen the School of Engineering and Technology, recruiting talented faculty and students from all over the world, bringing together teams of scientists and researchers from IUPUI neighbors such as the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, and Science to work on important projects, and creating exchange and internship programs for students to study abroad. Yurtseven stepped down as dean in 2010 after 33 years of service to IUPUI. The Yurtseven Scholarship in SET encourages students to study abroad.
