Mission

The mission of the University Library Information Literacy Program is to support the teaching and learning mission of IUPUI by engaging students in the development and application of skills needed to find, evaluate, and use information that will contribute to their academic success and lifelong learning goals.

Objectives & Goals

GOAL 1: Development of students’ skills, knowledge, and attitudes with regard to finding, evaluating, and using information.

A. Employ a graduated or tiered approach to teaching ACRL Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education. Possible strategies: specify desired skills at each level; provide self-directed learning opportunities for each level; offer classroom instruction at each level (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior and graduate levels); create tools to provide instruction at the point of need.

B. Foster a supportive learning environment by creating teaching assignments, supporting materials, and learning activities. Possible strategies: classroom, in person; tutorials; online, virtual classroom; Reference and Research Help Desks; indirectly, through faculty (e.g. instructional design role); chance encounters; Email, phone.

C. Evaluate students’ progress and solicit feedback from students regarding their IL experiences. Possible strategies: tutorial quizzes; standardized IL testing at specific intervals; survey students; E-portfolios

GOAL 2: Increased awareness among administrators, faculty, and students of information literacy, its benefits, and its importance to academic success.

A. Members of the Teaching, Learning & Research (TLR) Group understand and articulate the mission and goals of the Information Literacy Program. Possible strategies: training workshops for the TLR Group.

B. Communicate Information Literacy Program mission and goals formally and informally across the IUPUI campus. Possible strategies: attend faculty meetings; participate in campus and departmental committees; host faculty workshops (possible indicators: number of attendees, faculty incorporates library resources into curricula, etc.); promotional materials; classroom and online instruction; participate in departmental email distribution lists.

GOAL 3: Ongoing assessment of the information literacy needs of IUPUI students.

Objectives:

A. Determine baseline state of information literacy for incoming undergraduate students.
Possible strategies: employ standardized test (e.g. TRAILS, or our own); informal query of students.

B. Determine faculty expectations for students. Possible strategies: poll faculty; review course syllabi; host faculty roundtable discussions

C. Monitor changing information literacy environment. Possible strategies: share information from conferences and other sources; professional development activities.

GOAL 4: Comprehensive information literacy support across the curriculum using a coordinated and collaborative approach to instruction activities and research consultations.

A. Collaborate with faculty and campus administration on curriculum design and special projects. Possible strategies: attend faculty meetings; participate in campus and departmental committees; meet with faculty one-on-one; participate in departmental email distribution lists; obtain copies of faculty assignments.

B. Collaborate among librarians and library staff. Possible strategies: Reference and Research Help Desk staffing; share assignments and feedback; staff cross-training (i.e. infoshares)

C. Offer faculty training for incorporating information literacy into courses/curriculum. Possible strategies: customizable assignments; technology training (e.g. eShelf in MetaSearch, Oncourse CL Library Resources).

GOAL 5: Continuous improvement of the Information Literacy Program through ongoing assessment and refinement.

B. Create an assessment plan. Possible strategies: identify tools; analyze assessment data.
