INDIANAPOLIS—SirsiDynix, a library software and technology company, has selected the IUPUI University Library (UL) to be a recipient of the Power of Libraries Award. This is the inaugural year for the award, which recognizes libraries that are doing something inspiring and helping to bring about change in their community. One of three winners, University Library earned this honor for the "I Heart UL" program. I Heart UL is a popular assessment effort that gathers uncensored feedback from students reflecting what they like and dislike about the library. During the week of Valentine’s Day, students simply write their thoughts on a sticky note and post it on a board.
In eight years, University Library has collected over 10,000 notes of data and the feedback from students has led to numerous changes, such as extended hours during finals week and, recently, $1.75 million in support from IUPUI campus administration to complete a major redevelopment project. The renovation includes the library’s third and fourth floors and has included adding over 400 new seats, as well as more than 400 power outlets in the building. This is the first significant renovation that University Library has gone through since opening in 1993. Twenty-five years later, with a 70 percent increase in the number of full-time students at IUPUI and increased usage of technology devices, these updates are necessary to support the growth.
Willie Miller, Associate Librarian and I Heart UL creator, recently traveled to Atlanta, Georgia, to receive the award at the Customers of SirsiDynix Users Group, Inc. Conference.
“This program shows the power of a library in an academic community in how it is leading to make changes that are substantial in the lives of our student body,” Miller said.
