Learning Text Encoding Initiative (TEI)

WOW! When I began reading and learning about TEI, I felt like I was reading a foreign language. Initially, I was intimidated, and honestly, I still am. TEI is a standard for the representation of textual material in digital form through text encoding. For example, I am working on a project: Civil War: Governor Morton Telegraph Books and Slips, and once the facsimile of the telegraphs were transcribed, I began to learn how to encode these digital images. Why encode, you ask? Great question. Just a few basic reasons for encoding: encoding creates more research opportunities, and encoding enables users to create specific search queries. The history nerd in me wants to encode almost every word. Regardless of how detailed you encode, once you do, you open the door for discovery!
