IUPUI Faculty Grants for Digital Scholarship

Funds Available: $25,000

Purpose:

As a means of supporting the open access, use, and further promotion of IUPUI faculty scholarship, University Library is offering grants to support the digitization and online organization of collections related to faculty scholarship. Projects that meet the criteria below will be funded on a first come first serve basis. The project approval deadline is June 30, 2010, with project completion deadlines as appropriate and determined during coordination with Jenny Johnson, Digital Initiatives Project Coordinator.

The maximum available for a single project is $5,000. This amount can be used to cover the costs of digitization, metadata creation, and other tasks as needed.

Project Criteria:

1. All projects must have a faculty sponsor who is responsible for attesting to the scholarly or instructional importance of the project and a librarian sponsor who will coordinate the project. 2. The material to be digitized or digitally born material to be repurposed must be in the public domain or appropriate permissions to make them publicly available must be obtained. Obtaining permissions will be the responsibility of the faculty and/or librarian sponsors.

3. The materials to be digitized or digitally born material to be repurposed must be appropriate for the equipment available in the library or an outsourcing alternative must be available. The collection must be suitable for one of the library digital object management platforms (e.g. CONTENTdm, DSpace, or Open Journal System) available for collection access. Library sponsors will work with Jenny Johnson, Digital Initiatives Project Coordinator, to determine the appropriateness of the material for digitization, a strategy for collection arrangement and access, and to develop a cost estimate for the digitization piece of the project.

4. Metadata for the project must be manageable. Library sponsors should work with Tina Baich, Metadata Librarian, to establish an appropriate metadata strategy for the project and to establish a cost estimate for the metadata creation part of the project.

The completed project proposal form available here as an editable Word document should be submitted to Robin Crumrin, rcrumrin@iupui.edu Associate Dean, Collections & Information Access & Delivery. Associate Dean Crumrin will review and make final decisions on all proposals.
